In Gemnes 12-525, Pier Toffoletti creates a subtle visual tension between presence and absence. The female face is almost engulfed in the pictorial fabric of infinite shades of green, amid abstract fields of red, dusty white and hints of gold. The textured surface opens up into light transparencies that reveal minute details – the gaze, the line of the nose, a shadow on the cheek. Like an apparition, the figure exists and vanishes at the same time, evoking the idea of a fluid and changing identity. A work that speaks of mystery, transformation and unostentatious beauty.
