A small black steamship, resting on a table, retains all the evocative power of the great ships of yesteryear. The smoke drifting into the air seems to belong to a voyage that has already begun. Brandes thus transforms an object with simple, unadorned forms into an image rich in suggestion. The little house in flight adds an unexpected element, presenting us with a scene that has an almost ancient feel to it.
