In this view, Giovannini observes the sea from above, transforming it into a vast expanse of blue and turquoise criss-crossed by variations in light and hue. Small aeroplanes and boats emerge on the surface as minute, almost suspended figures, accentuating the depth of the scene. The varying shades of colour and the denser areas of the painting suggest the movement of the water, without disrupting its vastness. The bird’s-eye view reduces the landscape to its essentials and presents the viewer with an open, silent and ever-changing space.
